Derek Adam- Principal
Mr. Adam graduated from Liberty University in 2012 with a Bachelor of Arts in Elementary Education. He began his career teaching at Madison Heights Elementary School in Amherst County Public Schools. While there, he completed his Master’s in Educational Leadership from the University of Lynchburg. He was then hired as the Assistant Principal of Central Elementary, and later became the Principal of Central Elementary. Mr. Adam came to Campbell County, where he became the Principal of Tomahawk Elementary in 2023.
Mr. Adam and his wife recently moved to Rustburg with their three children, Lukas, Emery, and Sylvia, and their yellow lab, Chance. He enjoys spending time with his family and friends, being outdoors, watching various sports, and attending church.
Mr. Adam’s favorite quote is by Rita Pierson: “Every child deserves a champion: an adult who will never give up on them, who understands the power of connection and insists they become the best they can possibly be.” I look forward to continuing the partnership with the close-knit community of Rustburg Elementary and helping each student be the best they can be! Go Bulldogs!
Jaclyn Brandt-Assistant Principal
A proud graduate of Campbell County Schools, Mrs. Jaclyn Brandt earned a Bachelor of Science in Interdisciplinary Studies: Elementary Education (Pre-K–6) from Radford University in 2011. Following graduation, she returned home to Campbell County to begin her teaching career at Altavista Elementary School, where she taught fifth grade for four years. She then moved to Tomahawk Elementary School, where she taught third grade for four years. After her time in the classroom, Mrs. Brandt served as a literacy coach for six years, supporting teachers and students across multiple Campbell County elementary schools. In 2020, she earned a Master of Education in Educational Leadership (K–12) from the University of Lynchburg.
Outside of school, Mrs. Brandt enjoys gardening (while continuing to develop her green thumb), reading, and exploring new projects and recipes. Most of all, she values the time she spends with her husband, Tim, and their son, Owen, making memories together through outdoor play, family adventures, and visits to new playgrounds.
Mrs. Brandt believes that education is not the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire. She believes every child is full of promise and potential, and that educators have the privilege of partnering with families to spark curiosity, nurture growth, and inspire a lifelong love of learning. Grateful for the family members, teachers, and mentors who helped shape her own educational journey, Mrs. Brandt is honored to join the team at Rustburg Elementary School and help students shine far beyond the classroom walls.
